Right about now, I'm probably outside of Houston headed to the most elaborate Christmas celebration ever. Because of my Mom's job, she gets some AMAZING connections now and then. This is one of those connections.
A Texas Tech law alum, Mark Lanier, is a big shot (understatement of the century) in the legal profession. Some of his accomplishments include:
$480 Million dollars in a business fraud case
$118 million in an asbestos case
$253 million in a Vioxx case
And I'm sure there are tons of other such examples. And yes I realize that just because that was the verdict, he doesn't get all that money. But I also know that he gets a hefty chunk of it plus his billable hours. He's not hurting for money. These are just the first notable ones I found quickly. Needless to say, the guy has some serious dough.
And every year, he has a huge Christmas celebration for other big shots and some of his colleagues and personal friends. To call it a "celebration" is like calling Elton John "semi-gay"; just doesn't make sense. Every year, he flies in (on his private jet, complete with full-time pilot) a special performing artist to have a private concert on his property.
My Mom (being the amazing woman that she is) has been invited to this celebration past few years. Last year, I couldn't go because I had finals (boo on school). This year, I get to go!!!!!!!!!! I'm so so excited. Not only am I going with two of my absolute favorite people, we are going to celebrate my birthday a little bit there (I was in the thick of finals around my actual birthday).
A few years ago, Reba McEntire came, Hannah Montana was last year, Dolly Parton has been. You get the picture... it's not like he invites nobody's to this shin-dig. This year, his guest is Bon Jovi. Yes, as in Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, et al. When my mom came home a few weekends ago and told us we were on the guest list and who was playing, I thought my dear sister was going to pass out. Bless her heart.
And, don't get me wrong. Jon Bon Jovi is one FIIIIIIIIIIIIINE lookin' man. I'm not complaining.
You all know how I feel about Celine. The woman is amazing and my favorite singer ever. What Celine is to me, Bon Jovi is to Katie. And, at the two Celine concerts I was lucky enough to attend, my sister had a HUGE role in making it happen. She spent $300 bucks a ticket for floor seats in Las Vegas and forked over even more for her show in Houston a few years later. I can honestly say, if it werent for her, I wouldn't have been to see Celine yet. Lucky me, I've seen her twice, both sitting next to Katie. PERFECT. I always joked around with her saying that when I graduate and start making the "big bucks" I would take her to see Bon Jovi. And I definitely still will. But, I'm absolutely thrilled for her that she is getting to see them long before I'm done with school.
I can't wait to see the look on her face when they appear on stage. And, if by some miracle, she gets to meet them, I really think she might pass out. So, keep your fingers crossed that they do a meet and greet just for her.
I'll be back Monday with a review (complete with pictures).
"Why, you wanna tell me how to live my life?
Who, are you to tell me if it's black or white?
Mama, can you hear me? Try to understand.
Is innocence the difference between a boy and a man.
My daddy lived the lie, it's just the price that he paid.
Sacrificed his life, just slavin' away.
Ohhh, if there's one thing I hang onto,
That gets me through the night.
I ain't gonna do what I don't want to,
I'm gonna live my life.
Shining like a diamond, rolling with the dice,
Standing on the ledge, I show the wind how to fly.
When the world gets in my face,
I say, Have A Nice Day.
Have A Nice Day
Take a look around you; nothing's what it seems
We're living in the broken home of hopes and dreams,
Let me be the first to shake a helping hand.
Anybody brave enough to take a stand,
I've knocked on every door, on every dead end street,
Looking for forgiveness,
what's left to believe?
Ohhh, if there's one thing I hang onto,
That gets me through the night.
I ain't gonna do what I don't want to,
I'm gonna live my life.
Shining like a diamond, rolling with the dice,
Standing on the ledge, I show the wind how to fly.
When the world gets in my face,
I say, Have A Nice Day.
Have A Nice Day.
Have A Nice Day.
Have A Nice Day.
Have A Nice Day.
When The world keeps trying, to drag me down,
I've gotta raise my hands, gonna stand my ground.
Well I say, Have A Nice Day.
Have A Nice Day
Have A Nice Day"
